Teen Classes and Workshops 

Spring 2012 Session

8 Weeks: April 9 - June 3, 2012

There will be no classes on May 26 - 28.  Makeups for canceled classes will be held the weeks of June 4, 11 and 18.

 

Classes are arranged by day of the week beginning with those running on Mondays.

Studio classes limited to 15 students unless otherwise noted, Digital Media classes and Ceramics classes are limited to 12 students.

Teens aged 16 and up may take any of our adult classes. 

If you would like to take advantage of the sizeable Member discount on Yard School classes, please sign up for a Montclair Art Museum Membership FIRST, before paying for your Yard School of Art classes.

Students will draw from direct observation, learning the fundamental elements of line, value, form, perspective, composition, and proportion. Subject matter will vary, and include still life, landscapes, clothed figures, and sketching from the Museum's collection.

Calling all fashionistas to explore what's hot in fashion now! Students will work at their own individual level while learning about sketching the exaggerated fashion figure, clothing design, and basic sewing. Find your own sense of style as you turn fashion into art.

Julian Tejera
Students will be introduced to the technical and perceptual basics of oil painting. Building on the foundation of drawing and compositional skills, color mixing, paint application, and manipulating paint will be used to create form and space. They will paint from still life and use artwork in the Museum as reference.

The intention of this course is to provide high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to prepare and expand on their portfolio for admission to art school, college, and university. We will examine the application process of what art programs are both in search of, and requiring from your portfolio. The class objectives include art historical references with each project, exploration of various media, life drawing from a nude model, and class critiques. The goal for the students is to enhance their existing portfolio and help prepare them for admission to college.

An art class that is as unique as you are! Using today's trends as inspiration, with topics such as music and entertainment, sports, food, and pop culture, students will create a variety of two and three-dimensional art projects that are infused with their own creative choices and personal voice. With fine art materials, mixed media and imagination, the art of the next generation is limitless.

An all-inclusive portfolio preparation course for the digital age in which we live, this course will help teens develop a portfolio that has the ability to address any and all mediums, and include insight into how to take their work into the world. In addition to helping teens create their portfolios for post-secondary art schools, this course will help students understand ways in which to market their art by maximizing the potential of the internet. Tools such as website creation, blog creation, and social media will be covered. Additional topics will include marketing strategies, website communities for artists, and freelance options and opportunities.

Game design is a creative challenge that combines art, storytelling, and technical design. This class will introduce participants to the elements and tools of game design and provide an opportunity to produce original games. Using Adobe Flash, and other user-friendly programs, students will learn the basics of interactivity for video game design.

Learn to use the computer as a tool for artistic expression. This class will give an overview of creative ideas and processes in computer generated art and design. Students will develop skills and concepts in digital media through a series of projects, such as Photoshop-scanning, retouching a student's own photo, photo collage, poster art, Flash animation and website design.

This class is for teens who want to learn to throw pottery on the wheel. Throwing techniques for centering clay, creating bowls and cylinder forms will be covered. In addition, students will gain a strong foundation of finishing techniques, such as glazing and texturing. Individual vision and personal expression is valued and encouraged.

Ellen Denuto
Students will learn how to maximize the use of their digital cameras to create personal works of art. Through different assignments, students will learn about composition and lighting, as well as camera settings that will give them the creative tools they need to make their art have it's own unique voice. Students will learn how to transform their images using Photoshop CS5. Canon point-and-shoot cameras will be available for each student. Students are encouraged to bring their own camera.

John Atura
This course provides an opportunity for older teens and adults to work directly from the figure to explore sketching the human form and anatomy. It is especially useful for students 16 and older who need life drawing experience not provided in the high school art curriculum. Working from the nude model, a classical approach provides the basis for understanding the relationship of form and technique. Students will draw with charcoal, pencil and a variety of other mediums.

Sunday, May 6, Noon - 4 p.m.

Spencer Frohwirth
This one-day class will introduce teens to Reason, a computer software used by amateur musicians and major recording studios alike for professional music production. This program makes composing music accessible to everyone, even those without any previous experience. Teens will learn how to use pre-recorded loops and sequencers to produce and layer the beats, rhythms, and melodies of their own original songs. By the end of the class, students will get a copy of their song on CD and as an MP3 to take home.
